Cyber Security Research Center Opens in Seoul

2005-02-22

CyLab Korea, a cyber security research center, on Monday held an opening ceremony in Seoul and began full-fledged operations.

The research and development lab, named after CyLab at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), was set up last December by the U.S.-based institution and the state-backed Korea Information Security Agency (KISA).

It will focus on developing next-generation online security technologies.

"The combination of KISA`s hands-on experience and the technical edge of CMU will contribute to creating a trouble-free ubiquitous society. I hope researchers will help clear cyberspace of problems," said Lee Hong-sub, president of the KISA.

CMU provost Mark Kamlet said, "We expect the joint research will serve as a catalyst to upgrade the information security technologies of both countries by a notch."

Last December when CyLab Korea started its partial operation in a KISA office in eastern Seoul, CMU sent three researchers here to study sophisticated systems to predict and counter next-generation Internet infringement.
