Roh Spearheads Drawing Foreign R&D Centers

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun is heading the nation¡¯s campaign to attract foreign research and development (R&D) centers.
Sun Microsystems, the world¡¯s leading corporate solution provider for hardware and software, Wednesday opened its research center in Seoul to develop Java technologies for the Asia-Pacific region.
The company plans to spend $50 million for the next four years to develop Java, a programming language to enable wireless Internet in cell phones.
On the surface, the reason why the U.S.-based firm selected Korea is because of the nation¡¯s advanced info-tech infrastructure and rich talent pool, Sun¡¯s chief executive Scott McNealy noted.
``Korea has an extremely talented IT workforce and that is why we will continue to have a strong presence in Korea moving forward,¡¯¡¯ McNealy said.
However, a deputy director from the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) claimed in addition to McNealy¡¯s reason, Sun selected Korea because of President Roh.
``When Roh met with McNealy in May 2003 during his visit to the United States, he requested Sun to set up a Korean R&D lab and it has played a major role in the establishment of the facility,¡¯¡¯ the MIC official said.
