Viruses Rise 12 Fold

The number of new computer viruses found in South Korea grew twelvefold during the past five years, according to a domestic online vaccine developer Friday.
AhnLab said new viruses stood at 379 cases in 1999 but the figure soared 1,210 percent to 4,587 last year, followed by 435 in 2001 and 1,239 in 2003.
The trend continued into this year as AhnLab detected 765 novel viruses during the first three months of this year, up 11 percent from a year ago.
``The number of malicious codes started shooting up from 2003 as a plethora of mutants spread through the Internet, flooding cyberspace,¡¯¡¯ AhnLab¡¯s top researcher Kang Eun-sung said.
He expects more new viruses will attack the virtual world this year because mass-mailing worms _ Netsky, Mydoom and Bagle _ continue creating variants.
Netsky.29568, the worst worm from last year, maintained its notoriety in the January-March period as it affected most computer users. As many as 1,539 virus infection reports, or 9.8 percent of the total 15,479, were about the worm.
A flurry of Netsky mutants _ Netsky.17920, Netsky.16896 and Netsky.22016 _ also dwelled in the highest echelon of the infection list in the first quarter at 307, 211 and 210 cases, respectively.
