Hosting U.N. high-tech center

2005-05-20

The government plans to establish an international training facility for information technology in Incheon, the first subsidiary body of the United Nations to be based in Korea, President Roh Moo-hyun said yesterday.

The info-tech training center, managed by the U.N. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP), will focus on training high-tech personnel from the 62 ESCAP member countries as part as an international effort to overcome disparity in technology development and support e-government projects.

The government and the Incheon metropolitan administration will invest $10 million in the next five years to build the training center in western port city, said the Ministry of Information and Communication.

"The ICT training center will represent Korea`s role in the international community to reduce digital divide among countries and helping policymakers and engineers from other countries find ways to effectively integrate technologies to cope with their need," said Roh in a keynote speech at the Seoul Digital Forum yesterday.

Government officials, businesspeople and information technology executives from around the world are attending the forum.

Ministry officials said they will announce detailed plans for the info-tech training center after gaining approval by the National Assembly later this year.

Incheon is one of the nation`s three free economic zones designated for international development.
