White Porcelain Kilns in Bunwon-ri

Description
The white porcelain pottery kilns in Namjong-myeon's Bunwon-ri and Geumsa-ri, Gwangju-si are renowned as the origin of the Joseon white porcelain. The entire region of Gwangju-si was used primarily for state-run porcelain factories since the early Joseon period. A branch of the Saongwon kiln, which manufactured all the porcelain for the royal family and officials, was open and operated here until the late Joseon era. Firewood was abundant, the white clay was of excellent quality, and the Han River facilitated transportation of the finished goods. Considering such geographic conditions, its easy to see why so many ruins of pottery kilns were discovered in this region.
