Seoul hosts intellectual property conference

Oct 26, 2004

Seoul will jointly host with the World Intellectual Property Organization a ministerial conference on intellectual property for the least developed countries Oct. 25-27 at the Shilla Hotel, officials at the Korean Intellectual Property Office said.
Organizers said the conference will focus on finding answers to challenges faced by underdeveloped countries to integrate intellectual property into their national development policy.

Ministers and representatives from the 25 least-developed countries are scheduled to attend, with the list including Bangladesh, Sudan, Angola and Zambia.

The conference will also be attended by experts in the field from home and abroad, including Nobel economics laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz, who deliver a presentation, and Jeoffrey Yu, deputy director general of the World Intellectual Property Organization.

"This will be a chance to share Korea's experience in the protection of intellectual property rights in the course of its fast economic growth with less developed countries, thus strengthening ties with them," said an official from the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

Korea is among the 179 member countries of the World Intellectual Property Organization, a United Nations group. Korea ranked seventh with 2,947 international patents filed last year, ahead of China at 1,205 and India at 611.
