T-money to be much smarter
Nov 05, 2004
The recently introduced public transportation card, "T-money," will be upgraded to a much newer and smarter transportation card. The new card will contain an integrated circuit or chip that has the capability of accumulating points for each ride. Points saved from other cards, such as OK Cashbag, will be able to be transferred to pay for transportation fees.
"The point program for the public transport card is the first of its kind in Korea. Passengers will be able to enjoy point accumulation services soon after the point-transfer program is stabilized," said director Yoo Seung-won of the Korea Smart Card.
To be awarded with the benefits, one can purchase a new T-money card at subway stations or the LG 25 convenient store, and visit http://www.t-money.co.kr (available only in Korean) for membership registration.
Two types of T-money cards will be available from next month: standard-sized plastic card and cell phone accessory-shaped card. The plastic card can be purchased at 2,500 won and the accessory-type card at 5,000 won or 7,000 won.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is planning to further upgrade T-money cards so that with one card, users will be able to pay for public service charges, parking fees, and admission tickets to royal palaces in Seoul, as well as subway, bus and taxi fares..
