Red zones to aid bus users
Feb 21, 2005
The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to expand the number of red zones at major bus stops for the convenience and safety of passengers.
A "Red Zone" refers to the colored part of the road near the bus stops, which facilitate the advancement of the buses to the station. It is also designed to prevent passenger vehicles and taxies from illegally stopping or parking in these areas. A total of 366 bus stops will have red-colored zones by the end of this year.
In December 2004, the municipal government set up a pilot red zone that measured 70 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width at a bus station near the Hongik Univ. Station on the subway line 2.
Seoul City expects the red zone to help the elderly and the physically handicapped ride safely on the bus and also improve the safety of the citizens in rain or snow due to its anti-slippery materials that cover the area.
