Foreigners to receive Seoul citizenship

May 02, 2005

Thirteen foreigners will be named honorary citizens of Seoul on Sunday, the first day of the city's annual Hi Seoul Festival.

Among those receiving the honor will be Wayne Chumly, chairman of the America Chamber of Commerce, for creating a scholarship fund for needy students; Pamela Morris, wife of the British ambassador to Korea, for her charity work, and Paula Clementine Gaston Koeck, a Dutch professor at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, for creating a Dutch-Korean dictionary.

Other new honorary citizens will include Leif Donde, Denmark's ambassador to Korea, Istavan Torzsa, Hungary's ambassador to Korea and Giancarlo Faldani, a Catholic priest who has lived in Korea for 35 years.

A ceremony for the 13 will be held on Sunday afternoon at Seoul Plaza, in front of City Hall.
Sunday is the first day of the city's Hi Seoul Festival. The festival, a series of performances and cultural events at various locations around the city, will last until May 5.

A total of 512 foreigners have been named honorary citizens since Seoul began the program in 1958.
