Stream brings profit to Seoul City's accounts
Nov 22, 2005
As an average of more than 210,000 people per day visit the Cheonggyecheon in central Seoul, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has enjoyed a profit on souvenir sales, it announced yesterday.
According to the city government, monthly Cheonggyecheon souvenir sales were estimated at 152 million won ($146,000) from their beginning on Oct. 17th. The city made 8.3 million won in profit. The twenty-seven different souvenirs include memorial stamps, key rings, cell phone straps and T-shirts. Key rings and cell phone straps were the most popular items, with more than 3,000 of each sold.
Souvenir shops are located in the Cheonggyecheon Museum, the Seoul gift shop at Insa-dong and the Hi Seoul Bookstore. The city plans to add four more stores at Cheonggye Plaza, Samilgyo (Bridge), the Cheonggye Information Center and Hyojadong Community Hall.
The city government last Saturday also launched a car-free street beside the stream by banning traffic on 0.88-kilometers (0.54 miles) between Cheonggye Plaza and Samilgyo on weekends and national holidays.
Traffic will be banned from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and national holidays. An average of 310,000 people per day visit the stream at the weekends, and that stretch is the most crowded, the city said.
Seoul city also announced plans yesterday to install eight public toilets along the stream and give deductions for water charges on around 60 toilets near the stream that are open to visitors.
