Computer-based driver¡¯s license written tests will be expanded to 11 driver¡¯s license test centers throughout the country; it is expected that illiterates will be able to take driver¡¯s license together with people who can read.

HIT(www .hit. co. kr) announced on the 27th this month that it has been awarded and signed the contract for the ¡®Driver¡¯s License PC-based Written Test-Stage 2 Implementation Project¡¯ of National Police Agency-Driver¡¯s License Agency(www. dla. go. kr).

The purpose of this project is to convert all types of written tests for general driver¡¯s licenses (Class 1&2), motorcycle licenses and driver¡¯s licenses for disabled people and foreigners which were administered in paper test sheets and OMR card type answer sheets into a computer-based on-line environment.

Driver¡¯s License Agency(DLA below) will implement PC-based written test systems on the 6 major driver¡¯s license test centers in Inchon, Yongin, Daejeon, Daegu, Jeonbuk and Jeonnam during a 5-month period ending in December; service will begin in January next year. Following this, PC-based written tests will be administered in a total of 11 driver¡¯s license test centers including the 5 test centers implemented in the Stage 1 project(Seoul Seobu(West), Gangnam, Gangseo, Dobong, Busan Nambu(South)); PC-based written tests will be expanded to 26 nationwide driver¡¯s license test centers in the following years.

Once the PC-based written test system is implemented, applicants of driver¡¯s license test take their written tests on-line by using the PCs prepared at the test centers; after the test has ended, pass or fail can be checked in real-time. In addition, by interoperation with the consolidated information system operated by DLA, the entire process of public services encompassing test application/query/change/check of test results will be provided online.

In addition, DLA will replace the existing process for illiterate test applicants in which test supervisors read the test questions by a new process in which test questions are converted into digital voices so that illiterates can take the tests together with literate people by listening to the questions via headphone.
