Germany, Political relations to South Korea
Germany and the Republic of Korea signed a friendship treaty and began diplomatic relations 120 years ago. Close and trusting after the Korean War, relations are based above all on the countries' common historical experience, such as division, reconstruction (Wonder on the Han River), and Korean interest in Germany's language and culture. German experience with division, rapprochement, the fall of the Wall and the ensuing reunification afford Korean politicians and academics much food for thought in shaping the course of their own future.
President Roh will pay a state visit to Germany in April 2005. Main items on the agenda will be economic and scientific-technical cooperation, the impacts of German reunification and the situation on the Korean peninsula. Like his predecessor in 2000, President Roh will give a speech in a German university.
The two foreign ministers last met in November 2003 in Berlin and in April 2004 in Ireland. In December 2004, Federal Interior Minister Schily signed a visa agreement in Seoul and agreed on stepping up interministerial cooperation.
On 9 December 2003, the Parliament of the Republic of Korea passed a resolution on the 120th anniversary of German-Korean relations, recalling the signing of the trade, friendship and shipping agreement by the German Reich and the Kingdom of Choson on 26 November 1883. The German parliament for its part adopted a unanimous non-partisan resolution on 29 January 2004 on actively developing German-Korean relations.
