Project to Develop Deep Ocean Water to be Launched

A research center in charge of the systematic study and technology development concerning deep ocean water will be built in Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province. The construction of the research center will be completed in May 2005.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries held a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the deep ocean water joint research center in Oho-ri, Jugwang-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon Province on Sept. 8. Some 300 guests, including Chang Seung-woo, Minister of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, Kim Jin-seon, governor of Gangwon Province, Rep. Chung Moon-hun, Ham Hyung-gu, magistrate of Goseong-gun, and Byun Sang-kyong, president of Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute, attended the gala event.
A total of 4.2 billion won will be poured into the construction of the research center on 2,200-pyeong (some 7,260 square meters) land. It will house such facilities as a research and development building, a building for industrial specialization and a study building for fisheries specialization.
Related to the construction of the research center, Minister Chang said, "The research center will greatly contribute to the creation of the new ocean industry and the activation of regional economy by developing and supplying core technologies for use and industrialization of deep ocean water in the East Sea."
For this project, the ministry has been pushing ahead with the multi-purpose development project of deep ocean water through the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute. The ministry plans to spend 25 billion won for the project until 2010. The ministry plans to exert continuous efforts to realize diversified use and industrialization of deep ocean water.
