Korea to Spend 10 Billion Won in Biotechnology

January 21, 2005

The government will spend 10 billion won ($9.5 million) this year to support biomedical research, with the aim of commercializing animal organs for human transplants and other bio-engineered products within five years.

The Ministry of Science and Technology said on January 12 that it will also put emphasis on developing a so-called protein chip that helps detect diseases as well as immune system-controlling technology and intelligent medicine-delivery system. The spending represents a 25 percent increase over last year, the ministry said. A quarter of the budget will be used to develop animal organs for human transplants and another quarter will be set aside for producing the protein chip.

In the field of medicine, researchers have touted the use of animal organs as a way to provide better treatment for patients with ailing hearts and livers.
