Samsung SDI emerges as biggest OLED supplier

May 4, 2005

Samsung SDI surpassed Pioneer Corp. of Japan as the world's biggest manufacturer of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays for portable electronic devices last year, according to market researcher iSuppli Corp. on April 8.

ISuppli said Samsung SDI, the world's largest supplier of plasma display panels (PDPs), commanded 44 percent of the worldwide OLED market share in terms of revenue last year. Taiwan's RiTdisplay came second with a 22 percent share, followed by Pioneer.

OLEDs, unlike cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and PDPs that require a backlight unit, emit their own light. OLED is projected to emerge as a new mainstream display in the coming decade.

Worldwide revenues from OLED displays jumped 63 percent year-on-year to $408 million in 2004 and are expected to grow by 50.7 percent to $616 million this year, according to iSuppli.
