Cheonggye Stream to Become Wireless Internet Zone

Oct 2005

The Cheonggye Stream in Seoul, restored to splendor after 47 years under a concrete lid, will become one long wireless Internet access zone.

KT said Tuesday it would turn the banks of the stream into a wireless Internet zone.

In the first phase, 2.8 km from the DongA Ilbo building to Doosan Tower will offer wireless web access, with some 20 repeaters installed at intervals. The completion date will be set after the details have been negotiated with the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Wireless Internet streets stretching for several kilometers are rare in the world. There are already more than 14,000 wireless Internet zones in Korea, including Sookmyung Women's University, COEX and Incheon International Airport, but most of them have a radius of only a few hundred meters.

Once the system is in place, about 510,000 subscribers to KT's wireless Internet service will be able to access the web along the stream.
